UN AND AFRICA: Boko Haram terrorists displace 800,000 children in West Africa

• The lives of eight hundred thousand children in north-eastern Nigeria and neighbouring countries have been disrupted by Boko Haram terrorist attacks, according to the UN children's agency. In one incident a year ago, the terrorists caused outrage around the world when they abducted more than 270 schoolgirls from Chibok. UNICEF this week released its "Missing Childhood" report on what it calls the endless tragedies that are being replicated on an epic scale in Nigeria and across the West African region.

Kenya urged not to close Dadaab refugee camp

• The Kenyan government has been urged by the UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR, to rethink its decision to close the Dadaab refugee camp in the north of the East African country. Dadaab is home to 350,000 mainly Somali refugees. The decision to close the camp within three months was made after an attack by alleged Somali militants on Garissa University which led in the deaths of at least 147 people.

• Efforts are underway in South Sudan to ensure displaced civilians in United Nations camps are properly protected ahead of the rainy season, due later this month. The UN is currently housing more than one hundred and sixteen thousand civilians across the country in seven protection of civilian sites. Last year many of the camps experienced heavy flooding which destroyed belongings and increased the risk of diseases spreading.
