The UN says projects have helped millions of people around the world to engage in sports and other physical activities.

Cathrine Hasselberg reports.

Monday marks the second UN International Day of Sport for Development and Peace.

The day recognizes the positive influence that sport can have on the advancement of human rights as well as social and economic development.

Wilfried Lemke is the UN Secretary-General's Special Adviser on the issue.

"Sport has established itself as an effective tool for development and peace-building. Sport for development and peace projects around the world have addressed many of the challenges society has faced."

The theme for this year's celebration is boosting sustainable development.
