Suspension of death sentences in Pakistan welcomed by UN experts

The recent decision by the Supreme Court of Pakistan to suspend death sentences imposed by military courts has been welcomed by a group of UN independent experts.

A seven-year moratorium on executions in Pakistan was suspended in December after militants killed about 150 pupils and staff in a school in the north-western city of Peshawar.

The UN experts reiterated that terrorism attacks should not prevent states from complying with the stringent requirements of international law for the imposition of the death penalty.

Perpetrators of attacks on humanitarian workers must be held accountable

The UN humanitarian chief has reiterated the call for those who attack and kill relief workers to be held accountable.

Valerie Amos was responding to Monday's murder of UNICEF staff in Somalia which she described as a "horrific" reminder of the dangers faced by many humanitarian workers on a daily basis.

She said that increasing attacks on humanitarian workers have serious consequences for their ability to reach people who urgently need help.

Ms Amos repeated her warning that attacks on humanitarian workers can constitute a war crime.
