Women's skills needed to respond to disasters, says senior UN official

Women and girls must be part of the planning and implementation of policies dealing with disaster risk reduction, according to the head of the UN Population Fund (UNFPA).

Dr Babatunde Osotimehin, the Executive Director of UNFPA, was in Sendai, Japan, attending the World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction.

He said countries must understand that women are not just victims but are also change agents who must work together with men to respond to disasters in a more holistic way.

Nan Zheng spoke with Dr Osotimehin and first asked him what key messages he brought to the conference.

"Environmental Gender Index" helping to empower women

A new set of data, called the "Environment Gender Index", shows to what extent countries are integrating women in their environmental work.

According to the index, Iceland measured the highest in terms of gender equality and environmental efforts, while Congo got mostly low scores.

Lorena Aguilar, a gender advisor at the International Union for Conservation of Nature, was at UN Headquarters for the Commission on the Status of Women which ends on Friday.

She took part in a discussion on the transformative power of the index, as it highlights whether governments are empowering women.

Cathrine Hasselberg asked Ms Aguilar about the creation of the Environment Gender Index.
