Call for prevention of violence against children in post-2015 development agenda

The importance of including the prevention of violence against children in a post-2015 sustainable development agenda was stressed in a meeting at UN headquarters.

The meeting on Monday brought together diplomats, UN officials and activists to share ideas about proposals that are being discussed by negotiators for sustainable development goals.

The moderator of the event said participants want to make sure that the targets on violence against children in the proposals are measurable, achievable and cost effective.

South Sudanese flee violence and tensions in Greater Upper Nile States

Tensions and fighting between government and opposition forces in South Sudan's Greater Nile States are forcing people to flee towards Ethiopia and Sudan.

That's according to the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) which points out that people are in need of relief assistance.

OCHA says that aid agencies reached almost one million people with food, over half of whom were located in conflict areas.

Over 166,000 people affected by Cyclone Pam in Vanuatu

A flash appeal for funds to support the emergency response in Vanuatu following a devastating cyclone is due to be launched in the island nation's capital, Port Vila, the UN said on Monday.

More than 166,000 people in 22 islands in Vanuatu have been affected by last week's Cyclone Pam.

The UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Vanuatu, Osnat Lubrani, visited an evacuation centre over the weekend to see at first-hand the impact of the disaster on families.
