Mobile phones in Tanzania are being used to provide information about the deadly Ebola virus.

This is done under a new initiative of the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) in partnership with the Tanzanian Ministry of Health and Push Mobile, a Tanzanian private company.

According to the UN Resident Representative in Tanzania, Alvaro Rodriguez, there are three times more mobile phones in Tanzania than toilets, making the SMS technology the most efficient way to reach communities.

Priscilla Lecomte discussed the new initiative with Mr. Rodriguez on the line from the Tanzanian capital, Dar es Salaam.
