The global trends in drugs are due to be discussed by the international community over the coming week.

Delegates will meet at the 58th session of the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs, which is opening in Vienna, Austria on Monday.

Daniel Dickinson has more details.

The annual meeting of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) is an opportunity for the international community to take stock of the current trends in illicit substances.

It also acts as a policy-making forum.

Under discussion over the next few days are a number of issues including international cooperation in the fight against synthetic drugs and preventing the financing of drug trafficking.

Delegates from around the world will also look at ways of protecting young people from illicit drugs especially new psychoactive substances sold over the internet.

Other discussions will focus on recovery from drug use, youth substance abuse, overdose deaths and judicial cooperation across borders.
