Bollywood actor recognizes positive change in gender issues in India

A leading Bollywood actor says positive change is happening in India in terms of gender equality. Farhan Akhtar who's also UN Women Goodwill Ambassador for South Asia is in New York to attend the 59th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women. Daniel Dickinson asked him why there are still men in India who believe it's acceptable to abuse women.

Women in Afghanistan need to be recognized as active participants in society not just as victims, according to the UN Mission in the country, UNAMA. The UN says that Afghanistan is on the path to becoming a nation where every woman and girl is empowered to exercise her rights, but many challenges remain. UNAMA recently marked International Women's Day under the theme "Afghan women as stakeholders in building family, society and their country." Setyo Budi reports.

Experts discuss reducing risks of disasters

Experts from around the world are gathering in Japan to discuss how countries can better prevent and prepare for natural and man-made disasters. In recent decades Japan has faced a number of disasters resulting from tsunamis and earthquakes, and is expected to be showcased as an example of how to tackle these catastrophes. Ahead of the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction, Nan Zheng spoke with the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction, Margareta Wahlström. She asked her what outcome the UN hopes will be reached in Sendai, Japan.
