Marine sanctuaries can help heal the world's oceans, according to the Institute for Ocean Conservancy.

The organization is co-sponsoring an event at UN Headquarters on Thursday called "One Ocean: Achieving Sustainability Through Sanctuaries".

Stephanie Coutrix reports.

The event is focusing on the science and research relating to the protection of the world's oceans, which can reportedly be accelerated by creating marine sanctuaries.

Scientists from Argentina, China, Israel, the UK and the US are expected to present evidence that a science-based global plan can reverse the decline of oceans.

They will discuss with government representatives and business leaders what policy commitments it will take to achieve this.

The goal of the symposium is also to grow partnerships to ensure more robust ocean protection today and into the future.

The President of Palau is expected to provide insight into how national leadership and initiatives within the UN can help achieve ocean protection objectives.
