Yemen is collapsing before our eyes and the global community cannot stand by and watch, according to the UN Secretary-General.

Ban Ki-moon on Thursday was briefing the UN Security Council on recent developments in the country.

He said a dangerous political crisis continues in the capital, Sana'a.

Stephanie Coutrix reports.

Developments in Yemen threaten regional and international peace and security.

That's what the UN chief warned as he called on Security Council members to help the Yemeni people re-establish a legitimate government as soon as possible.

Yemen has experienced deepening instability and widespread violence following the political turmoil that started with protests in 2011.

Ban Ki-moon said support is urgently needed in Yemen more than ever before.

” Yemen is collapsing before our eyes. We cannot stand by and watch. Given these troubling circumstances, we all have a solemn obligation to live up to our commitments under the UN Charter. We must do everything possible to help Yemen step back from the brink and get the political process back on track.”

The Secretary-General added that his Special Adviser is facilitating negotiations with all sides on a peaceful way forward under very difficult operational circumstances.

He said all Yemeni parties must engage in these negotiations and cooperate in good faith.
