Relief workers in eastern Ukraine's Donetsk region are scrambling to deliver urgent aid to people displaced by heavy fighting in the area.

That's according to the UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR, which has teams on the ground assisting local populations in areas close to the frontline.

Government forces have been battling pro-Russian separatists over control of key towns in the eastern part of the country since April last year.

UNHCR Spokesperson William Spindler told Jocelyne Sambira that this puts the number of internally displaced people countrywide at close to a million.
