International peace and security is coming under the spotlight this month in the UN Security Council.

China is presiding over the 15-member Council in February.

Stephanie Coutrix reports.

The Chinese Ambassador Jieyi Liu said a ministerial-level debate on the maintenance of international peace and security will be an occasion to reflect on history, and reaffirm the commitment to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.

He said 2015 is a very important year for the United Nations and the international community as the Organization commemorates 70 years of its founding.

The year also marks the 70th anniversary of the victory over fascism, he added.

Ambassador Jieyi said it is time for the United Nations to look at how it can best work to maximize the opportunities to foster a new type of international relations based on cooperation.

"It is high time under such circumstance to reinforce multilateralism and also to reaffirm our commitment to peace and security and to working together to make this world a better place. So we see the opening debate in February in the Security Council as an event leading to the important commemorative events in September in the United Nations as a whole because maintaining of peace and security forms a very important part of the work of the United Nations." Around 20 Security Council meetings are due to take place in February.
