Radio "wonderful tool" for young people

Young people around the world are increasingly using radio to express their views and discuss issues they are concerned about.

In recognition of the power of the medium, the theme for this year's World Radio Day, which is observed on 13 February each year is "Youth and Radio".

The UN cultural agency (UNESCO) says it chose this theme in order to promote greater participation of youth in radio, not only as listeners, but as producers and broadcasters.

The UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) and Children's Radio Foundation have produced a manual called the Youth Radio toolkit, to help support this effort.

Derrick Mbatha spoke with the Foundation's Executive Director, Dr Michael Rahfaldt, on the line from Cape Town, South Africa where it is based.
