Over 9 million children in rural Afghanistan have access to education because of the introduction of community-based schools the UN says.

An estimated 3.6 million of them are girls.

These alternatives schools were built by the Government with the help of the UN Children's Fund to help students in hard-to-reach and volatile areas.

Parents used to hesitate to send their kids to school because of the extremely long commutes and unsafe travel conditions.

Setyo Budi of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) reports from the capital, Kabul.
