Migrant rescue programme "woefully inadequate"

Many more migrants will die crossing the Mediterranean Sea unless European governments step up search-and-rescue operations.

That's according to the UN Refugee Agency chief, António Guterres, who made the comment following the deaths at sea last week of at least 300 people who had fled from Libya.

He said the current rescue programme was woefully inadequate.

The Agency has repeatedly urged governments to address the needs of people fleeing conflict and trying to reach Europe, with the aim of reducing loss of life at sea.

Restraint urged as ethnic tensions intensifies in Myanmar

Armed groups in eastern Myanmar have been urged by the UN to exercise maximum restraint and avoid any further escalation of ongoing hostilities.

Clashes between the Tatmadaw people and ethnic armed groups around the Kokang region of Myanmar have been taking place since earlier in February.

A state of emergency was reportedly declared by the government on Tuesday.

Murder of Turkish woman condemned by UN

The murder of Turkish woman while she reportedly tried to stop a man from raping her has been condemned by UN Women and the UN Population Fund (UNFPA).

Twenty-seven year old Özgecan Aslan was, according to media reports, attacked and killed last week in the south-eastern province of Mersin

The two agencies said they joined in solidarity with the thousands of women and men who have taken to the streets across Turkey to say "No" to violence against women and girls.

UN food agency "determined" to continue operations in Yemen

The World Food Programme (WFP) has said it is determined to continue its operations across Yemen despite clashes between rival factions, the president's resignation and widespread instability.

Despite the significant security and operational challenges, WFP said in January it was able to reach about one million people with aid.
