Representatives of East African nations are meeting in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi to share best practices on fighting poverty and inequality.

The forum of Ministers of Social Development organized by the UN education and cultural agency UNESCO is the first of its kind.

Fifteen countries from the region are expected to attend.

Jocelyne Sambira has the story.

The overarching theme of the UN-backed meeting is "Global justice" with a focus on sharing national experiences and policies on issues such as poverty reduction and inequality.

The discussions will contribute to advance the United Nations' Post-2015 Development Agenda.

Other critical issues to be addressed are youth employment and skills development, population growth and its influence on social development.

The debates and presentations will lead to key policy recommendations and the adoption of a Ministerial Declaration on 26 February.
