The situation in the north of Nigeria has been described as "dramatic" by a senior UN official as the country struggles to contain increasing levels of violence.  The UN Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict, Leila Zerrougui made the comment as she toured Nigeria's Yola town in Adamawa State where she assessed how violence is impacting children. The UN estimates that 900,000 people, the majority women and children, have fled their homes. Meanwhile, hundreds of children have been killed, injured or abducted from their homes and schools.  Speaking to Jean-Pierre Ramazani, the Special Envoy shared in detail what she saw there.

Protecting women human rights defenders

A social media campaign by the UN is honouring women human rights defenders worldwide and raising awareness about the dangers of the job. Under the hashtag #reflect2protect, the UN human rights office (OHCHR) is releasing a series of 12 short video profiles of these defenders.  2015 marks the 20th Anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action that reaffirmed the fundamental human rights for all women.  These defenders not only helped define the agenda, human rights officer Lucinda O'Hanlon told Saori Terada, but they sometimes face violence and death in advancing these rights.  She began by explaining what exactly a women human rights defender does.
