Today's generation can be the first to end poverty and the last one that can take steps to avoid the worst impact of climate change, the UN chief has urged.

Outlining his priorities for the New Year, the Secretary-General launched a new campaign called "time for global action."

It aims to mobilize support for his new anti-poverty goals and reaching a climate agreement in 2015.

The Sustainable Development Goals for 2015 and beyond aim to safeguard the planet while securing a life of peace and dignity for all.

Ban Ki-moon had this to say.

” 2015 is a year of historic opportunity. We are the first generation that can end poverty, and the last one that can take steps to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. With the adoption of a new development agenda, sustainable development goals and climate change agreement, we can set the world on course for a better future. This must be a time for global action. Future generations will judge us harshly if we fail to meet our obligation.”

Mr Ban also called on leaders of the Nigerian terrorist group Boko Haram to immediately release the 200 girls they kidnapped in Chibok without conditions.
