A UN special envoy has expressed outrage over an assault by protestors on his Office in Gaza on Wednesday.

The Office of the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process (UNSCO) sustained damages to its premises and property during the attack.

The Office has a responsibility to assist in all issues related to the humanitarian situation and development challenges facing the Palestinian people.

The incident took place in the context of increasing incitement against the United Nations in Gaza, Robert Serry, the Special Coordinator said.

None of the staff was harmed during the attack because of the precautionary measures taken.

Mr Serry said Hamas was fully aware of the pre-announced demonstration and expressed concern that despite repeated assurances, security forces in Gaza did not take the necessary and timely measures to protect the UN compound.

The special envoy said he continued to hold the Palestinian faction Hamas fully responsible for the security and safety of all UN personnel and operations in Gaza pending the full transfer of security responsibilities to the legitimate Palestinian Authority.

He also ordered an urgent review of operations in Gaza.
