The escalation of fighting for control of Donetsk airport in eastern Ukraine has been described by the UN Secretary-General as "severe" and "alarming".

Ban Ki-moon has implored all sides to respect their commitments under the Minsk Protocol and Memorandum, a ceasefire agreement signed last September.

Fighting between pro-Russian groups and the Ukrainian military has displaced more than one million people since Russia annexed the autonomous Ukrainian region of Crimea in March 2014.

The UN chief noted that further deterioration of a situation that has led to heavy loss of life and civilian suffering must be avoided at all costs.

He added that the UN will support all efforts toward the resumption of a genuine peace process to restore Ukraine’s stability and territorial integrity.
