The apparent murder of a Japanese citizen by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) has been condemned by the UN Security Council.

Media reports on Sunday indicated that Haruna Yukawa had been killed after the terrorist group said the Japanese government failed to pay a ransom.

“This crime is once more a tragic reminder of the increasing dangers people face every day in Syria”, members of the Security Council stated.

They added it also demonstrates the brutality of ISIL, which is responsible for thousands of abuses against the Syrian and Iraqi people.

The UN is furthermore demanding the immediate release of another Japanese citizen, Kenji Goto, as well as all other individuals who are kept hostage by ISIL and associated terrorist groups.
