A memorial service was held on Thursday morning at the Beirut International Airport in Lebanon in honour of a fallen peacekeeper.

An investigation is ongoing to determine the "precise cause of death" of the peacekeeper and is being led by the UN Mission in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

The member of the Spanish contingent succumbed to injuries sustained during a fire incident while stationed near Ghajar along a UN buffer zone also known as the Blue Line.

Jocelyne Sambira reports.

Speaking to reporters earlier, Román Oyarzun Marchesi, the Ambassador of Spain to the UN, confirmed that the fire that killed their soldier came from the Israeli side.

The UN said that Hizbollah has claimed responsibility for a subsequent rocket attack on an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) patrol that killed two Israeli soldiers and injured others.

The exchange of artillery fire between the Lebanese Hizbollah militant group and the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) is in violation of a UN resolution in 2006 that ended the war between the two parties.

UN peacekeepers are tasked with patrolling the disputed border in southern Lebanon.
