India's efforts to accelerate the development of its solar and wind power are being hailed by the UN Secretary-General.

Ban Ki-moon made the remarks at a Summit in Ahmedabad town in Gujarat State, western India.

"Vibrant Gujarat" is a bi-annual event that brings together political, business leaders, investors, and corporations.

He also commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi's initiative to build "smart cities" that are energy efficient and high-tech.

Mr Ban urged India to take the lead in December in Paris where a universal climate change agreement is expected to be adopted.

Gujarat is also the birthplace of independence leader and father of the non-violent mass protests, Mahatma Ghandi.

Ahead of the Summit, Mr Ban visited a religious retreat or Asharam founded by Gandhi named after the Sabarmati River, one of the biggest in the State.

He also visited a solar power plant built on the Narmada rival canal in the town of Vadodara before heading to the capital city New Dehli.
