Historical march for freedom after 3 days of deadly terrorist attacks in France. UNESCO

Targeting Muslims for reprisals following last week's terrorist attack on a French satirical newspaper in Paris would only play into the hands of terrorists and contribute to the spiral of violence.

This warning has come from the UN Secretary-General in a statement issued after a huge march that took place in Paris on Sunday in memory of the victims of the attack.

Mr Ban welcomed the march which he said was also in solidarity with the victims of terrorism across the world.

He said he has been deeply moved by the images of Sunday's march "and the displays of global solidarity over the past few days."

Mr. Ban added that he "is strongly committed to the essential work of countering extremism, fighting anti-Semitism and other forms of discrimination, and upholding the rights to freedom of speech and expression."

The Secretary-General called for heightened efforts to promote tolerance and understanding.
