The window of opportunity to address climate change is fast narrowing, the UN Secretary-General warned on Tuesday.

Ban Ki-moon spoke at the start of the High-level segment of the UN Conference on Climate change under way in Lima Peru.

Representatives of governments are negotiating an agreement on climate change that is expected to be adopted in Paris next year.

The UN Secretary-General told the meeting that he was carrying a message of urgency and hope.

"We know that by addressing man-made climate change, we can build more resilient, prosperous, and healthier societies. But we must act now. There is still a chance to stay within the internationally-agreed ceiling of a less than 2 degrees Celsius global temperature rise. But the window of opportunity is fast narrowing." (25")

The Secretary-General stressed that all countries must be a part of the solution to climate change and all of society must be engaged.

The meeting in Lima, also known as COP 20, opened on 1 December and is scheduled to conclude at the end of the week.
