People and the planet will be at the centre of global action in 2015, according to the UN Secretary-General.

Ban Ki-moon on Thursday put forward his vision to the General Assembly on sustainable development goals that are expected to replace the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), due to expire at the end of the 2015.

The new post-2015 agenda is scheduled to be agreed upon next September by United Nations Member States.

The UN chief said these agreements should put people first and be what he called "underpinned by human rights".

The new agenda should include a compelling and principled narrative, based on human rights and human dignity. It will require serious commitments for financing and other means of implementation (0'17").

To support the work of Member States, Mr Ban has completed a Synthesis Report to guide their discussions.

He said it underlines essential elements that need to be considered, including dignity, people, prosperity, the planet, justice, and partnerships.
