There is no better way forward for Afghanistan than a national unity government, according to the head of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan.

Nicholas Haysom on Thursday briefed the Security Council on the situation in Afghanistan which is working to restore stability after years of coups, foreign military occupation and civil wars.

The country is also plagued by violence perpetrated by insurgents of the extremist Taliban group who have intensified their attacks as foreign troops prepare to leave the country at the end of the year.

Derrick Mbatha reports.
