A key report which sets the stage for negotiations on future sustainable development goals is due to be released by the UN Secretary-General.

The targets known as the SDGs are due to replace the Millennium Development Goals of MDGs, the deadline for which is the end of next year.

The new post-2015 goals are expected to be broader than the MDGs.

They'll tackle many issues, including ending poverty and hunger, improving health and education, making cities more sustainable, combating climate change, and protecting oceans and forests.

On Thursday, the UN chief, Ban Ki-moon, will present his Synthesis Report to Member States ahead of a September 2015 summit where the sustainable development goals will ultimately be drawn up.

The report brings together results from consultations, key papers and other global and intergovernmental processes which have been taking place over the last two years.
