Israeli authorities urged to probe "brutal death" of Palestinian Minister

Israeli authorities have been urged by the UN Secretary-General to conduct a swift and transparent investigation into what has been described "the brutal death" of a Palestinian Minister.

According to reports, Minister Ziad Abu Ein died on Wednesday after being hit and shoved by Israeli soldiers during a protest against confiscation of Palestinian land by Israel in the West Bank.

Stéphane Dujarric is Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General.

"The Secretary-General is deeply saddened by the death of Palestinian Minister Ziad Abu Ein, after a demonstration in the village of Turmus Ayya that resulted in a confrontation with Israeli security forces. He expresses his condolences to the family of Minister Abu Ein, the Palestinian people and the Government of National Consensus. The Secretary-General calls on the Israeli authorities to conduct a swift and transparent investigation into the circumstances of the brutal death of Minister Abu Ein." (28")

The Secretary-General also called on all sides to exercise maximum restraint and avoid further escalation.
