Governments around the world have been urged to integrate human rights principles in climate change negotiations taking place at a major United Nations conference in Lima, Peru.

The call has come in a statement issued by a group of 76 human rights experts in Geneva ahead of Human Rights Day which is observed on 10 December each year.

The UN independent experts said that human rights must also be part of a climate change agreement that is expected to be adopted in Paris, France in 2015.

They stressed that understanding and addressing the social consequences of climate change is fundamental to protecting human rights.

The experts added that the effect and causes of climate change must be seen in relation to the concept of justice.
