China's the leading force in global innovation and is on a journey from "Made in China" to "Created in China", the world intellectual property agency said Tuesday.

Announcing its latest findings, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) explained how China and to a lesser extent the United States, remained the world's most prolific inventors.

The findings are important WIPO says, because they mirror the state of the economy in more than 100 countries.

The agency's report highlights four main indicators including patents, which China dominated with about a third of the world's 2.6 million applications.

The United States had the next largest number of patent applications, WIPO says, followed by Japan and South Korea.

The Asian giant also drove trademark requests, with applications up 13.8 per cent in a year, according to the annual report.

The findings reflect a growing gap between China and the rest of the world, says WIPO, which defines intellectual property as inventions and designs as well as literary and artistic work.

Here's its Director General Francis Gurry:

"A huge amount of this growth is driven by China… it has the largest numbers of patent filings, trademark filings and design filings in the world, in each area, the Chinese office receives more applications than any other office in the world ….so strategically of course the country is on a journey from made in China to created in China."  (22″)

At the launch of the report Mr Gurry also highlighted that China's investment in research and development was second only to the United States and that it would equal this level by 2019.
