Women's rights are missing from food and nutrition policies, according to the Secretary-General of the International Human Rights Organization for the Right to Food.

Flavio Valente is currently acting as liaison for civil society organizations headed on Wednesday to the Second International Conference on Nutrition in Rome, Italy.

The conference is expected to endorse a political outcome document, called the Rome Declaration on Nutrition, which commits countries to eradicate hunger and prevent all forms of malnutrition worldwide.

Mr Valente says he regrets gender inequality wasn't included as a cause of malnutrition; yet the document does mention policies should pay special attention to women and empower women and girls.

Stephanie Coutrix asked Mr Valente to explain why gender inequality should have been highlighted as a cause of malnutrition.
