WOMEN: Performer Conchita Wurst uses talent to promote equality

The Austrian drag singer Conchita Wurst is using her talent to help fight discrimination, according to the UN Secretary-General.  On Monday, Ban Ki-moon praised the winner of the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest for promoting human rights education. Both were in the Austrian capital to mark the thirty-fifth anniversary of the Vienna International Centre, an event at which Ms Wurst performed. Stephanie Coutrix reports.

Women can lobby for laws that fight discrimination, impunity

Women can play a significant role in situations of violent extremism through lobbying for laws that fight discrimination and impunity. That’s according to an Iraqi female lawyer, Suaad Allami, who established the first legal clinic in the Middle Eastern country. Since January this year, the UN estimates that 1.8 million people in Iraq have fled fighting between the Islamic militant group ISIL and government forces. Ms Allami, the Founder and Director of Sadr City Women’s Center and Legal Clinic told May Yaacoub that the safety of women and girls can be improved if they have a greater voice.

Rise of global crises have detrimental impact on security of women, girls

Increased violence around the world, mass displacement and humanitarian catastrophes have been particularly detrimental to the security of women and girls, according to the UN. The Security Council recently held a debate on the situation of refugee, displaced and stateless women and girls. Jocelyne Sambira has the story.
