"Unprecedented" growth in importance of UN Police

The past fifteen years have seen an unprecedented growth in the scale, scope and importance of United Nations Police according to the UN's head of peacekeeping operations.

Briefing the Security Council on Thursday, Hervé Ladsous said that the role of UN police was adapting to what he described as rapidly evolving operational environments.

Vannina Maestracci is a Spokesperson for the UN.

"He also highlighted the critical linkages between all elements of the criminal justice chain – police, justice and corrections."

There are currently over 12,000 United Nations Police from 91 Member States working in thirteen peacekeeping operations and four Special Political Missions.

Police operations are distinct from the deployment of peacekeepers.
