UN CALLING ASIA: Solutions sought for food wastage problem in Papua New Guinea

Most people in Papua New Guinea grow their own food and are able to feed themselves, but lack proper methods of preservation, a UN Food Agency (FAO) official has said. The majority of the population in the south west Pacific island nation practices agriculture and fishing. Food easily goes to waste because there are no facilities to keep the produce from going bad, Blaise Kuemlangan, the Chief of Development Law Service at FAO told Stephanie Coutrix. Speaking on the margins of a global conference on nutrition in Rome, Italy, Mr Kuemlangan began by giving her an overview of the food situation.

Toilets bring hope to rural people in Nepal

Toilets are one of the basic necessities that people in developed countries take for granted, but it is not so for millions of people especially in rural areas of poor countries.The UN estimates that globally, about two and a half billion people don't have access to a clean toilet and about one billion of them practice open defecation.Nepal in South Asia is one of the countries where open defecation remains a serious problem for people in rural areas.The situation is even worse for a blind old woman, as Mahbub Ahmad reports.

Filipinos rebuild after Typhoon Haiyan

Farmers and fishers in the Philippines are well on the road to recovery and building more resilient livelihoods, a year after Typhoon Haiyan hit the Asian country. The typhoon, one of the most powerful storms ever recorded, not only killed thousands of people, but also devastated the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands more. There was widespread destruction of crop fields, coconut trees, fishing nets and boats. Alessia Anibaldi, Emergency Operations Manager for the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), has been telling Sandra Ferrari about how communities have responded over the last year.
