UN CALLING ASIA: "Close to impossible" to reach communities in terrorist-controlled areas in Iraq

It's becoming "close to impossible" to reach communities in areas of Iraq which are controlled by terrorists, according to Nickolay Mladenov, the Head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI). The extremist group which calls itself the Islamic State, also known as ISIL, has been terrorising large areas of northern Iraq. It's become infamous for the beheadings, summary executions and rape of local people. Reem Abaza has been speaking to Mr Mladenov. She began by asking him how the international community can help to defeat ISIL

"Alarming" levels of opium production in Afghanistan


Record levels of poppy cultivation in Afghanistan, have been described as "alarming", by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). A survey released on Wednesday shows, that the cultivation of poppy, the plant from which the illegal drug opium is made, could rise to 17 per cent this year. According to UNODC, Afghanistan now produces some 90 per cent of the world’s illicit opiates. The survey also shows a clear link between insecurity and opium cultivation. Nutrition habits in China changing, obesity on rise

Obesity is on the rise in China because nutrition habits in the country are changing, according to a senior UN Food Agency Officer. Warren Lee, Senior Nutrition Officer at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) says, people are earning more, so they are eating more and exercising less. According to the FAO's 2014, State of Food Insecurity in the World report, China has reduced the number of undernourished people by 138 million people since 2012. Now that people can afford more food, Mr Lee tells Stephanie Coutrix, they are not making the right choices.
