Members of Parliament from around the world are gathering at the UN on Friday to discuss how best to support peace efforts between Israel and Palestine.

The UN Palestinian Rights Committee which is convening the meeting says a peaceful settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict needs to be grounded in international law and human rights.

Earlier this year, a 50-day conflict between Israel and the Palestinian faction, Hamas in the Gaza strip led to the deaths of 2000 Palestinians and 70 Israelis.

On Monday, a senior United Nations political official called on leaders from both sides to make what he called the "difficult compromises" that will promote stability and ensure long-term security in the region.

Parliamentarians are discussing the role they can play in building a strong commitment by all stakeholders to ensure the international commitments of countries concerning the Palestinian issue are met.
