An attack on a mosque in Kano, Nigeria, which reportedly left dozens of people dead has been condemned by the UN Secretary-General.

Hundreds of other people were injured in Friday's assault on Kano Central Mosque.

On Saturday, no-one had claimed responsibility, but Nigerian officials said it bore similarities to other attacks by the outlawed Boko Haram group.

The UN chief, Ban Ki-moon described the incident as "horrific" and said there was no justification for tragetting civilians.

He reaffirmed the full support of the UN for Nigeria's efforts to fight terrorism.
