The importance of food safety and quality and the role played by nuclear technology is the subject of a two-day symposium that kicks off in Vienna, Austria, on Monday.

The International Symposium on Food Safety and Quality, is being hosted by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Jacob Sasanya, a food safety Specialist from IAEA says in a globalized world where food is traded from different parts of the world, it's important to ensure that it is safe and doesn't contain harmful chemicals.

"The symposium is bringing together food safety stakeholders from around the world to come and discuss pertinent issues on public health and international trade, how food safety and quality can enhance public health and improve international trade."(17")

IAEA, the UN nuclear watchdog agency, is increasingly promoting the use of nuclear science and techniques to make food safer, detect unsafe food and fight food fraud.
