The lights of the iconic New York City Empire State Building are turning orange on Monday night to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will join the Executive Director of the UN Women agency and American actress Teri Hatcher to light up the building at sunset.

Orange was chosen by the UN as the international colour to mobilise people around the world to take action to stop violence against women.

The illumination is also kicking off 16 days of activism against gender violence.

The Empire State has a tradition of changing colour to recognize various occasions and organizations throughout the year.

The UN Secretariat building in New York will also be illuminated in orange at the same time.
