An attack on a synagogue in West Jerusalem which reportedly killed four Israelis has been condemned by the United Nations.

According to media reports, two Palestinian men armed with a pistol and knives attacked worshipers on Tuesday morning, injuring eight other people.

Tension has been rising in the region following a 50-day conflict between Israel and the Palestinian faction, Hamas in the Gaza strip earlier this year.

That conflict led to the deaths of 2000 Palestinians and 70 Israelis.

The United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Robert Serry, said he was "abhorred" by the synagogue violence adding there was "no justification" for these "deliberate killings."

He called on all sides to try to prevent the further escalation of what he described as a "very tense situation in Jerusalem."
