A suicide bomb attack in Afghanistan that killed at least 50 civilians and injured a further 60 has been condemned by the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon.

The attack on Sunday in Yahyakhail district in the south-eastern province of Paktika took place at a sports field where people were attending a volleyball match.

Many children were among the dead and injured.

Stéphane Dujarric is the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General.

"He denounces this attack against men, women and children who were enjoying a community sporting event not only as a grave violation of Afghan and international law, but as fundamentally abhorrent."

Afghanistan continues to recover from decades of insecurity as attacks by extremist groups continue.
