Women can play a significant role in situations of violent extremism through lobbying for laws that fight discrimination and impunity.

That's according to an Iraqi female lawyer, Suaad Allami, who established the first legal clinic in the Middle Eastern country.

Since January this year, the UN estimates that 1.8 million people in Iraq have fled fighting between the Islamist militant group ISIL and government forces.

Rape, abductions and gender-based violence occur frequently in the unsafe confines of refugee camps.

Ms Allami, the Founder and Director of Sadr City Women's Center and Legal Clinic told May Yaacoub that the safety of women and girls can be improved if they have a greater voice.
