The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon has said he was shocked and alarmed by underground tunnels used for terrorist purposes in Israel.

Mr Ban spoke to reporters after he was shown the tunnels by an Israeli army general in southern Israel on Tuesday.

The Secretary-General said he particularly condemned rocket attacks by the Palestinian faction Hamas which uses the tunnels.

He also said that the cycle of building and destroying in Gaza must be stopped.

Secretary-General Ban urged the Israeli and Palestinian leaders to resume their peace talks and address their underlying issues.

He said talks are the only viable option to bring peace.
