Immediate action must be taken to protect civilians in the northern Syrian town of Ayn al-Arab, according to the Secretary-General of the United Nations.

The UN chief is urgently calling on all those who can, to protect people from the terrorist group ISIL.

Ayn Al-Arab, also know as Kobane, is reportedly very close to being captured by the Islamist militant group ISIL who have led what Mr Ban described as a "barbarous campaign" resulting in numerous deaths and injuries.

Ban Ki-moon says he is following with grave concern the ongoing offensive by ISIL which is committing "gross and extensive" violations of human rights and international law.

He says massive displacements of civilians have also taken place into Turkey.

On Tuesday, warplanes from a US-led coalition fighting the militants have reportedly been striking targets in support of Kurdish forces battling the terrorist group.
