Tributes paid to Nobel Peace Prize winners

Tributes are being paid to the Pakistani teenage activist Malala Yousafzai after she won the Nobel Peace Prize for her work on the right of girls to education.

The teenager was shot in the head by Taliban gunmen in October 2012 because of her beliefs.

The prize was awarded jointly to the Indian child rights activist Kailash Satyarthi.

The Nobel Committeee praised him for his work “focusing on the grave exploitation of children for financial gain."

The UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon called the laureates "two of the world's greatest champions for children."

Irina Bokova, the Director General of UNESCO, the UN Cultural Organization said the prize sent a "resounding message to the world about the importance of education for building peaceful and sustainable societies."
