The international community should understand that with 75 million unemployed youth around the world a "business as usual" approach is no longer acceptable, the UNDP's Assistant Administrator has warned.

Magdy Martínez-Solimán was speaking at the opening of the first global forum on youth issues, taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The three-day forum is bringing together about 700 policy makers from governments, civil society, and academia.

Mr Martínez-Solimán said working with and for young people, especially those who are vulnerable and in need, is indispensable to achieve any human development.

” This is no time for business as usual. Our world has almost 2 billion young people. More than one third of them live in fragile and conflict affected countries and territories, and 75 million are unemployed.

Mr Martínez-Solimán added that existing policies to help these young people are not fully implemented and as he described, still "lack teeth".

But the good news, he said, it that 122 countries worldwide have a national youth policy, compared to 99 in 2013.
