Labour and delivery rooms in Malawi are too far away for most pregnant women, putting their lives and their newborn babies' lives at risk.

That's according to Dr Mary Shawa, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Affair of Malawi.

The UN Secretary-General recently held a special event for partners of his global Every Women, Every Child programme.

Since it was launched 4 years ago, it now boasts over 300 partners.

It aims to bring an end to the preventable deaths of mothers and children everywhere.

Ms Shawa began by telling Jocelyne Sambira she was pleased by the generous contributions made by several countries at the event.
