An attack on parliament is an attack on democracy itself, according to the Secretary-General of the UN-backed Inter-Parliamentary Union, IPU.

On Wednesday, in Canada’s capital city of  Ottawa, an armed gunman killed a soldier standing guard at the National War Memorial before entering the Parliament building.

Martin Chungong expressed shock and sadness over what he described as a "wanton act of violence" against an institution that represents the will of the people.

Local media report that the gunman was also killed.

The Union expressed solidarity with the people of Canada during this difficult time.
