The Indian film actor and director Aamir Khan has been named as a UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) Ambassador in South Asia.

Mr Khan will support UNICEF's work to promote the rights of children in the region to nutrition, with a focus on ending stunting.

UN Spokesperson Vannina Maestracci:

"Mr Khan said that child stunting remains one of the greatest development challenges in the region. After sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia is the region with the highest number of deaths of children under the age of five.  Mr Khan is currently in Nepal, where he took part in the launch of a national nutritional campaign."  (18″)

Aamir Khan said he would urge parents, families, and leaders at all levels to adopt nutrition practices that will "help children grow and develop to their full potential."

He becomes UNICEF Ambassador as the 25th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) is celebrated.
